ABOUT MY ART....
My paintings are inspired by the representational world, but creatively re-imagined. Whether I am painting a Provence landscape, a still life with flowers or a seated figure, I don’t copy what I see, but instead look for the subject’s essential form. Through experimental drawing and painting, working both from life and photographic references, I try to re-create the subject using varying degrees of exaggeration, expressive colour, shape and line. In this way I try to create art works that are visually compelling and accessible, stylistically moving between contemporary realism and expressive abstraction.

Over the last 20 years I have experimented with all kinds of painting media: acrylic, water colour, gouache, pastels, encaustic, and have often mixed these materials when it suited me. As an art teacher who taught all media, experimentation was an imperative, and this gave me the confidence to take creative risks that ultimately affected my painting style and forms of expression. I paint mainly in acrylic, and often draw back into my work with pastel.  I continue to explore  watercolour, especially when traveling, but also when I feel the need to experiment and the results will often point me in new directions in acrylic painting. The choice of media is often determined by what I want to express and the way I want the subject to appear.

ABOUT ME....
I have always painted and ‘made art’. I studied fine art (B.A., Western University), art history and art education (M.A., and B.Ed. University of Toronto ) and then worked in museum administration and as a secondary school art teacher over a 25 year career.  I left teaching in 2008 and since then have painted daily, with studios in Guelph and Haliburton (ON, Canada).  I regularly exhibit my work, and continue to teach adult art workshops, some of which include …
